Red zebra cichlid female holding eggs12/21/2023 She may be treated as an intruder if reintroduced weeks later.Īnother option is to to strip the eggs (if you have an egg tumbler) or fry (if you have a cycled grow out tank ready) from the mother (that is to manually force the mother to relinquish the eggs or fry. A few week's abscence from the main tank completely erases what ever hierarchal position she currently holds in the tank. Lots of rock cover in the tank will significantly decrease that possibility though. However I wouldn't keep the mother with the fry for more than several days or a week tops (her maternal instincts will wear off and she may cannibalize her progeny. The mother will be more comfortable among the rocks, and opportunistic mbuna's can damage or even suck fry through the mesh.Ī 10gal maternity tank/grow-out tank is a good idea which I've used in the past. I wouldn't recommend putting a mouthbrooding mbuna mom or fry in one of those. (Expect 10-40 fry.the larger and more experienced the mother is the greater the brood size). Unless you have a sure plan of what to do with the fry as they grow, that is what I would recommend. So I'm trying to decide on what to do with her. I didn't think they'd spawn this quickly as they're all around 2.5". I'd like to make a decent effort with this while also learning for future spawns.Īs a side note - I have no idea who the father is, but I'm suspecting we may have hybrid fry as my wife said she thought she saw momma and a yellow lab "doing circles" a few days ago. Should I get a 10gal tank or so and quarantine her off on her own for the next few weeks? Do I just let it go naturally? There is a ton of rockwork in the tank, so she's got plenty of places to hide.ĭo I need to get a holding net (sorry I don't know the proper term) to section her off from the rest of the crew? Maybe they're larger and I just don't know what an inch looks like any more. Quite frankly, I didn't think they'd spawn this quickly as they're all around 2.5". I did some light searching in the Malawi forum and didn't see a ton of info on caring for a holding female, so bear with me if I'm repeating a lot of questions as I've never experienced this before. Upon closer inspection, sure enough - EGGS. I then noticed that she had a larger mouth than normal. She's got 5! Anyways.I looked around and saw her in the corner of the tank just hanging out. I sure learned a valuable lesson in not trusting the egg spots on the anal fin. I had noticed our larger red zebra (who I thought was a male but never vented) wasn't with the rest of the crew. I walked over to the tank to do a quick inventory to make sure everyone's OK/behaving themselves (I do this every day since we have the Kenyi in there). Well, much to my surprise someone's gone off and had a little fun without me knowing it :l19:
